Saulsbury writes a friend from Dover, Delaware, concerning recent activities at the University of Virginia including a rage for the German card game "my aunt, your aunt" and his own winnings at "Pedro." He notes that students have been "shipped ... for cutting lectures and raising particular h--l generally" including two who "got drunk, went down to a whorehouse, kicked up the mischief, [and] shot a whore, nearly killing her." Saulsbury admits that he himself has visited the "ladies" but not often as "clap" and "pox" are rampant among the students. He adds that he goes on sprees once a week in groups too large for one or two policemen to handle, noting that the townspeople think the students "a race of heathen." Saulsbury concludes by enquiring after friends and adds in a postscript that he has passed intermediate examinations.
